When it comes to product safety, much of the responsibility lies in the packaging. Consumers expect companies to accurately label goods and share safety standards. Everyone knows to check items for information—especially ones we’re meant to consume. Dosage, ingredients, age restrictions, and more are all essential parts of keeping customers safe.

However, any parent can tell you that labeling isn’t always enough, especially when it comes to packaging products that could potentially be harmful. If there’s a way, children will always get into things they aren’t supposed to. Hence why the development of high barrier, child-resistant packaging is so essential. To keep the very young safe from accessing products not intended for them, there are several characteristics of child-resistant packaging.

What Is Child-Resistant Packaging?

The term “child-resistant” refers to a specific set of packaging standards outlined in the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. These standards include a packaging closure that children under the age of five would be challenged to open, while still providing a packaging solution that doesn’t prevent seniors from accessing the product. The simplest forms of child-resistant packaging utilize a locking closure molded into the package, which requires an additional degree of dexterity. In addition to a child-resistant closure, bags are manufactured using durable and puncture-resistant materials, which are a minimum of four mil. thick.

An integrated child-resistant closure ensures kids can’t find workarounds, such as accessing contents by removing the closure mechanism or getting through a different part of the package. Typically, child-resistant packaging is too sturdy to pull, tear, or puncture—especially by the standards of the average five-year-old child. The CR closure serves as the primary line of defense, while the thicker, tear-resistant packaging material prevents easy tearing or puncturing of the package.

Common Forms of Child-Resistant Packaging

One of the most practical forms of child-resistant exit packaging is found in stand-up pouch packaging. Our child-resistant varieties differ in the unique mechanism that ensures kids won’t be able to open them. New bag closure technology utilizes a press-to-seal zipper mechanism that makes it highly resistant to curious children.

When most people think of child-resistant packaging, many imagine common medicine bottles. The method of pressing and turning to unlock and similar technologies effectively keep young children out. Much like the previous forms mentioned, child-resistant caps require coordination, strength, or dexterity that children under the age of five tend to lack.
